DJ Evilldewer, another Scope artist, is pioneering a new sound out of Boston with the sounds of the 60s and 70s juxtaposed with the futuristic feeling of beyond. Just two days ago his most recent record, Soul De Rey, was released on his bandcamp and has been my soundtrack for the past two days as I return home. The smooth cosmic sound draws the listener in and is a perfect complement to any rainy day, or any day. Make sure to have this when you travel to calm you down in case you get stuck between two people too fat to sit in their seats (welcome to Tennessee).

The final Scope release for the Holiday season comes from Pause. The frequent OTO collaborator (see the video for Freshest) delivers his newest release, Time To Go, with the same boom bap that has graced his previous records. Time To Go does not disappoint and each track leaves your head bobbing into the next one. My favorite tracks were The Middle and Be You. Be You features Catch Wreck.

This Saturday was the last show of 2011! Even though it was finals week I still had to end the year right and get one of my favorite Boston MCs to come through. Charmingly Ghetto The MC stopped by to share some insight into his creative process and into the development of his newest release, his internationally flavored and acclaimed mixtape Study A’Broad. The mixtape was recently reviewed in the Boston Globe and has been getting a lot of attention. Make sure to get the entire discography from his bandcamp which includes production from the Atlanta team Introspective Minds as well as the international squad CG assembled for his new release.

I’ll be back in Tennessee over break and will be posting Nashville stuff. Be on the look out!

Tomorrow night is a must attend event! Anyone in Boston who supports local hip-hop needs to come through for this. The Boston Beatdown will showcase Boston’s finest producing talent with sets from Peter Beatz, Kasi, Massappeal (Boombap Addicts), The Arcitype , Sir Locksley (Jungle Club and Grindtime Battles Series), Rah Intelligence (Retrospek), and Evildewer (Magnificent Kingdom and A Darker Shade). With the talent stacked so high this event should be one of the best for a while.

One of Sir Locksley’s most recent battles for Grindtime against Orlando’s Isaac. I saw Sir Locksley at Grindtime New England’s event on Sep. 9th at the Boston Center for The Arts (Hibernian Hall) and was hooked since.

This past Saturday E The Real and DJ Manipulator graced the studios of WTBU and came through for on-air performances and an interview. We discussed new projects, future goals, and solved the crisis on Wall Street. E has been releasing material since 2003, and now his 8th studio album, Dont Be That Guy, can be bought on his bandcamp. Me looking like a fool with the legend Percee P!

Since 1979 Percee P has wrecked mics with his unique and unconventional “fast rap” style. While not always excepted by all, Percee P stuck with his style of rhyming and has since influenced generations of rappers to take the same aggressive multi-syllabic assault on the microphone. Today Percee P is considered a legend in the rap world and his influence is evident in the music of artists from Edan to DMX and everyone in between. While a true icon for rap fans Percee P still remains humble and continues to engage in self-promotion by selling CDs at shows to his fans (I met Percee P this way in LA as he sold me Madlib’s remix to P’s debut solo album Perseverance). He continues to go open mic events, local battles, and any event where his presence can help support the culture which he helped start. This past Saturday I had Retrospek in the studio (made sure to spell it right!). The group had played a show the day before with Torae at the Western Front and killed it (check out the Torae interview as well). They have been getting a lot of hype recently, especially since their inclusion in The Phoenix’s 2011 Rap Class. This was one of the best interviews/in-studio appearances I have ever had. Listen to hear about, 9/11 conspiracy theories, online chat rooms, and the reason why Dr. Dre is garbage! Support local hip-hop and spread the word!
